For those who aren't used to looking for the poetry inside the banality the difference is not evident.
You can say: “Of course, they write 99 cents instead of 1 € to make it seem less expensive: it's a trick!”
Sure, but what's there beyond?
The fact is that you can loose yourself inside a cent: it's the “abyssal cent”.
Actually one cent is worthless (sometimes you even avoid accepting 1 cent change) but in that very moment, face to face with my favourite yoghurt, that cent turns into something I can invest in 1000 different ways: it's the most important cent of my life, the magic one that, for a psychological trick, will give me everything i haven't yet.
In the end, at the till, the checkout assistant gives me the one cent change.
I look at it smiling: “I've been dreaming about 1 cent!”
