Home monuments

I look inside my house and notice objects that withstand the time: for example an useless 15 years ago simultaneous translator that doesn't even work anymore. In spite of furniture changes, displacements, periodical thowings away of all the useless things, it's still there, on the piece of furniture near the tv, as if it was hidding itself.

We build monuments to remeber something or someone. But actually a monument, in order to remeber a great man or an important event, that is to last throughout the centuries, it has to be forgettable. It has to be so discreet that he can be ignored.
To pass undamaged through different historical epochs and different forms of government it has to be so neutral not to disturb. The huge statue of a dictator, even if aesthetically wonderful, won't last if the regime is replaced by a democratic govermnemt.
Monuments we admire are still there, still stand because, all through these years, in spite of changes, people could ignore them (avoiding destroying them).

Just like that stubborn translator: a real home monument.
